Domenico Calia was born in 1985 and he began studying the clarinet at a very early age. He graduated in 2003 from the Music Conservatory “V. Bellini” in Caltanisetta, studying under M° Vittorio Luna.He improved his talent under the careful tutorage of Giuseppe Garbarino, Vincenzo Paci, Angel Jean Cino, Massimo Scorretti, Italo Capicchioni, Cristian Chiodi Latini, Antonio Lampasona and Crescenzo Langella.He is a versatile performer, boasting a large repertoire ranging from classical music to modern-contemporary, which is his speciality. His performance shows different techniques: suono ombra (shadow sound), suono rotto (broken sound), suono tenuto (kept sound), suoni multipli (multiple sounds).He has inspired many musicians and he is deeply respected by a number of different contemporary composers. He had the honour of receiving a special mention in “Eloquio”, a very challenging composition, written for him by Crescenzo Langella in 2015.The musician Giuseppe Gioffrè wrote the piece entitled “Musing and Passion” for him. It is an unusual composition written for a single clarinet, with jazz improvisations and an unusual arrangement of a piano, drums, a string quintet and a clarinet quartet.Teresa Valentina Caiati dedicated two musical pieces to him in 2016: “La voce della gravità” and “Vertigine” both for the clarinet and accompanied by a string quartet. She wrote the following about him: “Versatile is the adjective that resounds in your mind when you hear the suggestive atmospheres created by the clarinet of Domenico Calia. Depth of sound and crystal-clear acrobatics, are qualities that one can rarely find together in an artist, characterising the voice of an instrument capable of expressing new imagination.Calia participated, as the first chair clarinet at the International Workshop “Estate Musicale Frentana” from 2002 to 2005.At the tender age of eighteen, he approached the world of professional music, performing the Gran Partita by Mozart at the Abruzzo Symphony Institute.He has been performing with renowned solo musicians: Marco Pierobon, Milva, Andrea Noferini, Nina Beilina, Ettore Pellegrini.He has been honoured to perform with great conductors: Donato Renzetti, Vlad, Massimiliano Caldi, Daniel Agiman, Rafail Pylarinos, Michele Vitti, Alessandro Tortato, Mauro Vidoni, Luca Ferrari, Gianfranco Spinnato, etc.He has recorded for the musical association “Benedetto Albanese” in Caccamo, The Abruzzo Symphony and the Opera Festival in Florence.He has been accepted into the orchestra of the famous La Scala in Milan. He has been declared the winner of a number of competitions:First Prize: 3rd Edition of the City of Belestrate National Competition7th Edition of City of Caccamo National Concert for Young Musicians1st Edition of the National Music Festival of the City of Balestrate2nd Edition of the City of Gangi National Competition (Mauro Patti Award)Qualification from the 1st Edition of the Carlo Agresti International Musical Competition – Grancia Certosina di Salerno.Certification for soloist in the clarinet section for the execution of Mozart's kV 622 for the AIMA association of Milan.He carries out an intense concert schedule, as well as being the professor of a number of Masters courses.Domenico Calia is an official Pomarico artist and he uses their famous crystal mouthpiece for clarinets. He is currently recording due CDs “Contemporary Clarinet” and “Mozart and the Clarinet”, edited and distributed by “Da Vinci Classics”, and independent label based in Osaka and part of the Osaka Mozart Association.
